Tae Eke Educational Resources
The Legend of Okatia tells of a mighty tōtara tree who lived in the Puketoi Ranges and possessed great strength and magical power. Restless and seeking a new home, Okatia uprooted himself and journeyed across the land. When he encountered a powerful mountain range blocking his way, he gathered all his strength and split it in two. As he travelled from east to west, Okatia carved a deep path that filled with water, forming Te Apiti (the Manawatū Gorge) and separating the Tararua and Ruahine ranges. The story explains how the land was shaped by living, ancestral forces and reminds us of the deep connection between whenua and whakapapa.
