Tarikura - Single or Tray A4 Puzzle
Tae Eke Educational Resources
Taurikura is a powerful Māori legend about responsibility, humility, and transformation. A high-ranking chief’s daughter, Taurikura refuses to help her elderly grandfather when he asks her to fetch water, forcing him to struggle down a steep gorge alone. When he returns and scolds her for her selfishness, Taurikura is overwhelmed with shame.
That night she flees her village and enters a sacred cave, where she begins to transform into a ngarara, a tuatara-like being. Completing her transformation, Taurikura plunges into the river and swims toward the sea, carving new waterways through the land as she travels. Exhausted, she finally settles on Karewa Island, where she remains in lizard form.
