Tae Eke Educational Resources
Pania of the Reef is a treasured Māori legend of love, longing, and sacrifice. Pania, a beautiful sea maiden, falls in love with Karitoki, a young man of the land. Though they secretly marry, Pania must return to the ocean each morning to survive.
When Karitoki is tricked into feeding Pania cooked food, she is no longer able to return to the sea and must flee back to her people forever. Heartbroken, the lovers are separated.
It is said that Pania still appears on the reef, gazing toward the shore, while their son Moremore watches over the waters as a powerful kaitiaki. This timeless story speaks of devotion, loss, and the deep bond between people and the ocean.
