Matariki Capes
Tae Eke Educational Resources
The Matariki Dress-Up Cape Set includes nine beautifully designed capes, each inspired by one of the nine stars of Matariki and their unique meanings: Matariki, Pōhutukawa, Tupuānuku, Tupuārangi, Waitī, Waitā, Waipuna-ā-rangi, Ururangi, and Hiwa-i-te-rangi.
Created to support imaginative play, cultural learning, and storytelling, these capes invite tamariki to step into the world of Māori pūrākau while exploring creativity through dress-up and role-play. Children can wear the capes as they pretend to be guardians of the stars, act out Matariki stories, or simply enjoy open-ended imaginative play in classrooms, kōhanga, early learning centres, and at home.
The capes encourage movement, confidence, and self-expression, while also providing a gentle way to introduce tamariki to Matariki, te ao Māori, and connections to the natural world. Each cape comes in a distinct colourway and pattern that reflects the theme of its Matariki star, helping children visually connect with the story behind each star.
Each cape measures 650mm wide x 500mm long, making them a comfortable and practical size for young children. Lightweight and easy to wear, the capes are ideal for everyday play, cultural celebrations, Matariki events, and learning experiences throughout the year.
