Tae Eke Educational Resources
Kuirau Park was once a cooler lake called Taokahu, long used by the Whakaue tūpuna as a special bathing place guarded by chiefs. When Kuiarau, the wife of the chief Tamahika, was taken by a taniwha while bathing, Ngā Atua caused the lake to boil and destroy the creature. From that time on, the place became known as Kuirau.
