Māui wanted to stop people from growing old and dying, so he bravely tried to challenge Hine-nui-te-pō, the Kaitiaki of death. He crept toward her while she slept, hoping to change the fate of humankind, but he was discovered and could not succeed. Even though Māui failed, his courage is remembered, and people honour him for trying to help everyone live forever.
