The Battle of the Mountains is a powerful pūrākau that tells of the great warrior mountains Tongariro, Taranaki, Tauhara, and Pūtauaki — who once competed for the love of the beautiful mountain maiden, Pīhanga. Their rivalry grew into a fierce battle that shook the land, reshaping the landscape forever. In the end, Tongariro remained beside Pīhanga, while the others journeyed away, carving rivers, valleys, and pathways as they went. This story explains the origins of many important landmarks and teaches tamariki about love, rivalry, consequence, and the living spirit of the whenua.
